    Staff Nurse

    Caroline Allen

    Personal Story

Born in Hamilton, Victoria, in 1871, Caroline Mary Allen was 44 years of age when she enlisted. An experienced nurse, she had most recently been matron of the private Anatole Hospital in Kalgoorlie. She embarked on RMS Orontes at Fremantle on 11 August.

In early September, Caroline briefly worked at No. 1 Australian General Hospital in Egypt. She was then transferred to Lemnos to join No. 2 Australian Stationary Hospital from 19 September 1915. She remained with the hospital until it returned to Alexandria on the Dunvegan Castle in January 1916.

Following the Gallipoli campaign, Caroline served in England and France. She was promoted to sister in October 1918, shortly before the armistice was signed. Caroline’s attachment to the AIF was formally terminated on 5 December 1919.

On her return home, she took up residence on a citrus orchard at Harvey, Western Australia. She then travelled to Sydney to resume her profession and study child welfare.

She died in Perth 13 December 1957, aged 86.
